What is this?

In 2012, I maintained a blog for a Northeastern University class called Reinventing the News. The subject of the blog was Twitter and its use in journalism. Below are the posts I wrote, as well as some homework assignments which were part of the process.

Covering Boston, tweet by tweet

It hit Adam Gaffin when the lights went out on the T. A few years ago, a maintenance crew tripped a breaker, cutting power to the four MBTA train lines in Boston. Gaffin, who covers the city in his news blog, Universal Hub, was not in a subway car when it happened. But he was […]

Reporters are everywhere, journalists are not

Four media professionals discussed Twitter and journalism in a recent video for PBS, and the general theme seemed to be that the platform is not a threat, but a tool for  journalists. It’s a subject that’s cropped up multiple times in my blog posts this semester. Anyone on the Internet can report in a tweet […]

The pope joins Twitter

He’s posted no tweets, but he already has over 400,000 followers. Only about a day has passed since it was announced he was joining Twitter. Pope Benedict XVI joined the social media platform with the account @pontifex. The New York Times reports that the pope will review tweets, but aides will write the updates. “The messages […]

Stats, so many stats

Journalists beware, this post includes numbers. Lots of them. There’s no doubt Twitter is a growing platform, but it is helpful to bring some quantitative perspective to that. CEO Dick Costolo last month dished out some interesting data on the exponential growth Twitter has seen in recent years. (I saw the figures in a TechCrunch […]

Advertisements will pop up at the top of Twitter feeds as part of the company’s latest effort, according to the story on the Advertising Age website. Atlantic Media is working with tech ad venture 140 proof on the […]

Michael Maness on the future of news

Volatility in many ways is a marker of modern journalism. The profession is dealing with persistent concerns about the future. Yet in an atmosphere that verges on disquietude, one thing is certain: journalism is changing. Michael Maness, vice president of journalism and media innovation for the Knight Foundation, discussed at an event at Northeastern University […]

Planning a final project

With the semester rapidly accelerating to an end, it’s already time to begin planning a final digital media project. I intend to pursue a story about how The Boston Globe and its reporters use Twitter for journalism. The topic is both relevant to my beat and local to the Boston-area. Yesterday, I contacted Adrienne Lavidor-Berman, […]

Two things to watch for on Election Night

It’s Election Day in America and as poll results begin to emerge this evening, Twitter will no doubt be a destination for many journalists and curious voters. This is simply a note to pass along two interesting things to look for in how the election is covered on Twitter tonight. 1) This from John Herrman […]
